It is clear from the outset of How Survivors of Abuse Relate to God that the author is determined to challenge the silence around individuals’ experience of abuse and its impact on their spirituality. It is admirable that Susan Shooter takes on this conceptually ‘muddy’task, but she is well equipped to do so, drawing not only from her academic knowledge but also from her personal and professional experience of having been ordained and involved in ministry for many years. Shooter is motivated to answer the following question: what do abused people reveal about God that can be brought to bear on theology? She sets out to address this question through the use of a qualitative analysis of nine in-depth interviews with women from various religious denominations who have experienced some form of abuse—from child sexual abuse to physical violence.
