Contingent work and precarious employment are terms used to describe employment arrangements involving uncertainty about continuity of employment. Contingent work implies that labor is performed only when required, whereas the term precarious employment connotes the job and income insecurity in many such arrangements. There is growing evidence indicating that some types of contingent work are associated with a significant deterioration in worker safety, health, and well-being. The authors review the international evidence that contingent work is associated with inferior occupational health and safety outcomes. The existing theory and evidence provide clues about the characteristics and correlates of this relationship. Findings suggest that ultimately safe behaviors on the part of individual workers requires accurate hazard perception, appropriate task training, and an ability to learn from experience …
