Observations of surface and subsurface quantities (eg snow cover and soil moisture) can be assimilated into “surface” models with the help of an ensemble of atmospheric surface forcing. An example is the CAM6+ DART Reanalysis, which covers years 2011-2020 (K. Raeder AMS2023), which slashes the cost of surface assimilations. These are most conveniently run in surface model configurations of the Community Earth System Model (CESM).
