Cane molasses was diluted 15-fold, and 3 samples of 200 ml were treated with 15 g lead subacetate and filtered, then polarimetry was performed (a) immediately, (b) after deleading with K oxalate, or (c) after adding 0.5 ml glacial acetic acid and filtering. Discrepancies between the pol and purity values obtained using these variants are indicated and discussed; influences of dextran and the different amounts and reactivities of reducing sugars (notably unfermentables) are noted.
