Colobine dental morphology Colobines have the same number of teeth as other catarrhines, with a dental formula of 2-1-2-3. The maxillary and mandibular incisors are heteromorphic, so that those that are isolated and unworn can generally be correctly identified and sided in the jaw (Figure 6.1). The maxillary lateral incisor is mesiodistally narrower and more pointed than the central (Vogel, 1966). The mandibular incisors are fairly similar in size, but the lateral is again more pointed than the central, so that its high point usually lies close to the mesial corner and the incisal edge slopes downward (towards the base of the crown) as one moves distally. Unlike the mandibular incisors of Papionini, those of colobines do have enamel on their lingual surface (Delson, 1973).
