In Chapter 3, Erich Steiner discusses his motivation of studying linguistics and introduces his work from different perspectives in SFL and translation, including machine translation in the 1980s, corpus-based research, register, explicitation, grammatical metaphor, integration of product- and process-based research, and language description and comparison. He also relates the application of SFL to translation studies, covering topics such as SFL and other functionalist theories of translation, the tools for translation contributed by functionally oriented work and translation as a method for language teaching. In addition, he summarizes the contributions of SFL to translation and suggests some possibilities for future research.
