The aqueous extract of flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis was evaluated for its antilithatic potential in vitro. In view of various medicinal properties of flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, the present study was formulated to assess the antilithiatic activity of the aqueous extract in male wistar rats. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is a good remedy for leucorrhoea, chronic cough, urinary diseases and psychiatric ailments, without any side effects and is less expensive. Recurrence and persistent side effects of present day treatments for urolithiasis restrict the use of allopathic medicines. As an alternate solution, phytotherapy is being sought. Medical management of lithiasis is still a challenge for modern medical practice. The presence of calcium oxalate crystals was evaluated immediately and after 24 hrs of stone induction. Crystal aggregation after 24 hrs was inhibited by Hibiscus rosa-sinensis extract. The results showed that the extract interfere with early stages of stone formation and may represent an alternative form of treatment and or prevention for urolithiasis.
