Dear Editor: Pelvic radiotherapy is an essential component of curative therapy for many cancers, improving survival and local control of the disease. However, radiation damage to the healthy tissue is a common and serious complication. In this sense, the gastrointestinal tract and in particular the rectum, is the site most frequently affected, owing to its fixed position and its close proximity to the radiation area in the treatment of the urological, gynaecological and gastrointestinal tracts malignancies. Haemorrhagic radiation-induced proctitis (HRP) is a well-known late complication of radiotherapy. The most severe forms of rectal bleeding may necessitate hospitalization and repeated blood transfusions. Radiation damage may occur in acute or chronic form. The acute form is seen in 50–75% of patients, either during or up to 6 weeks after radiotherapy, usually resolving after 2–6 months. It is characterized by diarrhoea …
