Early in his encyclopedic history of how social movement organizations influenced nationallevel policymaking related to local food in the United States and UK, Hunt quotes from Tocqueville’s Democracy in America:“The English often perform great things singly, whereas the Americans form associations for the smallest undertakings. It is evident that the former people consider association as a powerful means of action, but the latter seems to regard it as the only means they have of acting.” Keeping Tocqueville’s observation in mind throughout the pages that follow is helpful, as Hunt takes the reader on a dizzying survey of the development of laws, policies, programs, initiatives, and projects, undertaken by the American (federal) and British (central) governments, which had implications for the evolution of local food systems in the two nations.
