The status of nutrient elements in soil determines the growth and nutritional value of field crops. Heavy metals such as Cu and Zn act as key regulators for a range of plant physiological processes such as Cu and Zn-dependent enzymatic reactions, involvement of Zn in protein sequences as Zn2+-binding structural domains, and Cu as a vital component for electron transfer reactions (Cobbet and Goldsbrough, 2002). Moreover, various heavy metal ions such as As, Cr, Cd, and Pb are highly toxic to living cells. Excessive accumulation of these metals in plants has resulted in the alteration of absorption and transport of essential elements, interfering with normal metabolism, and having an impact on growth and reproduction (Xu and Shi, 2000).
