Organization studies makes sense of its objects of study by grounding them in instrumental relations: organization arises, and becomes the object of management, as a structuring means of containing and controlling what is otherwise uncertain, unruly and unproductive. Advocates of sensemaking theory continue in this vein of thought: how best to recover order, prevent disorder, and thereby attain organizational resilience. Though their solutions are various, their unquestioned solution driven, instrumental epistemology remains consistent. In this paper we question the largely taken for granted assumption that sense is made only, or even primarily, via the recovery of order and prevention of disorder. We do so by bringing to the fore the philosophical foundations of sensemaking theory as conceived by Weick and, by drawing from Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt, imagining alternatives.
