Normal and diabetic rats were given into the distal duodenum an isotonic solution labelled with 51chromium and were killed 30 min later. Radioactivity was estimated in 10 equal segments of the small intestine. Transit was retarded in the diabetic rats with changes apparent as early as 1 week. Changes in the characteristics of the interdigestive myoelectric complex occurred in diabetes, the major change being increased activity in front cycle length and reduced propagation velocity of the activity front through the small intestine. This delayed transit may, in part, be secondary to the reduction in propagation velocity of the activity front.
