Recently, a paper was published in Anesthesia & Analgesia in which the authors present a decade’s worth of salary surveys conducted by the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) Committee on Economics and Governmental Affairs, on behalf of the SCA. 1 The survey is sent every 2 years to all SCA members, and the results are typically provided to SCA members who contribute. The paper by Dalia et al is a remarkable distillation of a decade’s worth of survey data, and the authors are to be congratulated for their efforts. The results are interesting, and alarming, for those who practice cardiac anesthesiology. The paper may be summarized as follows: despite being better trained than ever, and doing more cardiac work at higher supervision ratios, cardiac anesthesiologists are being paid less than they were 10 years ago, in real terms.
