Background: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) acts by transferring electrons from mitochondrial complexes I and II to III. As its serum levels physiologically reduce with aging, CoQ10 supplementation has become a popular practice, dismissing drug safety and efficacy studies. 1 Herein, we investigated antiaging effects of orally administered CoQ10 through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Methods: Of the 50 screened participants, 41 women between 60 and 76 years of age were randomized into 3 groups that received a 12-week treatment: CoQ10 100mg capsules/day, CoQ10 200mg capsules/day, and placebo. Clinical, histological, molecular, and safety parameters were then assessed. This study was approved by the ethics committee and participants signed an informed consent.
