1M alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine [choline-L-alfoscerate] 1 gJday was found to be significantly more effective than 1M cytosine diphosphocholine 19Jday (which has been shown to improve the symptoms of cognitive deficit in vascular dementia) in 120 patients with vascular dementia.
60 patients were randomised to each group in this multicentre study and received treatment for 90 days after a IS-day washout period. By study end, patient evaluations showed a significant improvement in both treatment groups; however, the Wechsler memory scale, the modified Parkside behaviour rating scale and the Sandoz clinical assessment geriatric scale (especially relating to cognitive function) scores were significantly more improved in alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine compared with cytosine diphosphocholine recipients.
