The long- and short-term effects of rain forest clear-cutting on the guild of scarabaeids was studied in Mexico by comparing 3 surviving tropical rain forests (Boca de Chajul, Palenque and Los Tuxtlas) during 1964-65 and a mixture of rain forest and pasture (Laguna Verde) during 1972-73. The 3 rainforest locations showed similar species composition and guild structure: 24-27 species, with non-rolling dung beetles being dominant. Generalist species were more abundant than necrophagous and coprophagous species and nocturnal species were more abundant than diurnal species. In Palenque, the edge of the forest and a recent clearing were also sampled. There were 27 species within the forest, 11 on the edge and 5 in the cut zone. The dung beetle guild from the forest-pasture had 18 species with only 4 belonging to the original forest. Diurnal species were more abundant than nocturnal species and …
