Background

Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) was proposed in June 2023 as a more accurate term than non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as it better highlights the underlying pathophysiology of liver disease and its associated metabolic derangements.

Methods

US adults aged 20 years and above from the NHANES 2017-2020 cycle were queried. MASLD comprised of metabolic dysfunction associated steatosis (defined as a median controlled attenuation parameter of> 288 dBm) and fibrosis (defined as median liver stiffness of> 8.6 kPa); in addition to meeting a cutoff for (BMI, Blood pressure, Blood glucose, Triglycerides, and HDL-cholesterol). The Life's Essential Eight score estimates cardiovascular health (CVH) and is categorized into Ideal (≥ 80), Intermediate (50-79), or Poor (< 50).
