'In other research using NSFG data, one of the authors compared the out-of-wedlock fertility reported in the survey with vital statistics for the same periods and found that, contrary to expectation, the survey did not lead to an underestimate of out-of-wedlock fertility. However, there is a suspicion that first births after which the child was given up for adoption were underreported in the survey data used, since only a handful of infants were reported as never having lived with the mother. Therefore, the results of our study must be interpreted as referring only to those mothers whose infants remained in their care. Unfortunately, there is no adequate way to estimate the completeness of reporting of marriages or marriage dissolutions, since the registration systems in the United States are seriously incomplete.(See: J.
