Conducted 3 experiments in which the Ss read a series of 1-paragraph expositions dealing with a variety of unrelated topics. After reading the texts, Ss rated confidence in ability to use each text to draw correct inferences. Ss also performed an inference verification test for each text. Confidence ratings and test results were used to derive 3 measures of calibration of comprehension, that is, accuracy of self-assessments of knowledge regarding the text. University students (80, 60, and 39 in Exps I–III, respectively) served as Ss. In Exp I, calibration was assessed when the confidence ratings were secured immediately following each text and also when confidence ratings were delayed until all texts had been read.
