2.5 Personal CO exposure measurements are performed by placing monitors in the participant’s breathing zone, but do not account for ventilatory or anatomic differences that may affect carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) production. Importantly, blood COHb can be accurately measured in exhaled breath (r= 0.96-0.98) and portable, lightweight devices can detect exhaled COHb (eCOHb) in less than one minute. We hypothesize that measuring eCOHb is feasible in a rural, developing world context and that eCOHb would not correlate with COHb levels calculated from personal CO exposure monitoring. Further, we hypothesize that eCOHb would correlate with acute measures, such as respiratory symptoms and inflammation, but not chronic measures, such as lung function measurements.
