The virus-associated plant diseases have a history of more than 100 years in India. Viruses have undoubtedly infected plants and caused diseases for centuries before they are described and proven to be the causal agents. But important progress related to the identification of plant viruses only began after the 1970s in India. Plant viruses have emerged as the most serious constraints in the production of several crops in India during the last four decades. Virus diseases constitute a major limiting factor to the quality and productivity of cereals, horticulture crops, and many other economically important crops all over the country.
