Background

The US population has continued to age, with an increase in the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Despite this epidemiological change, trends in the mortality of adults≥ 65 years with AF and concurrent SLE are yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to assess the trends and regional differences in AF and SLE-related mortality among older adults in the United States.

Methods

Death certificates from the CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) database were examined from 1999 to 2020 for AF and SLE-related mortality in adult's≥ 65 years of age. Ageadjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 persons was calculated and stratified by year, sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic region.
