In the research of VET transition a significant literature focuses on pathway and student academic literacy support (Aird et al. 2010, Willcoxson, 2010). However, there has been less research addressing the lack of support of online experience of VET students studying at Universities (Bliuc et al. 2010; Ellis et al. 2007; Paechter & Maier 2010). This paper highlights a recent project funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC), examining the first year VET students’ learning experience at University. The lack of IT skills has been identified as a key factor contributing to difficulties in online learning. The support strategy addressed in this paper reflects student focused design (Goodyear & Yang, 2008; Yang, 2010) for an IT support pilot program which encourages students to take greater control of their learning.
