Childhood trauma (CT), conceptualized as emotional, physical or sexual abuse or emotional or physical neglect before the age of 18, is a well-known risk factor for many psychiatric disorders in adolescence and adulthood. Psychiatric disorders associated with CT show earlier onset, more severe/persistent symptomatology, increased suicidality, and greater comorbidity with other psychiatric illnesses. Moreover, CT is associated with poorer somatic outcomes, including a higher risk of asthma, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and respiratory disease. Currently, no evidence-based treatments specifically targeting CT exist. This warrants further attention to develop personalized (preventative) interventions.
