Rationale
Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are incidental findings on chest computed tomography (CT) that may represent an early-stage of pulmonary fibrosis (PF). It is unknown if prevalence or severity of ILA differ among racial groups.
Methods
COPDGene is a longitudinal multicenter cohort of smokers, self-identified as non-Hispanic White (NHW) or Black/African American (B/AA). The analytic cohort included participants with visually assessed ILA (n= 529 phase 1; 586 phase 2). Sequential multivariable linear regression models were used to determine the association between race and measures of severity (FVC, 6MWD, age at death (AAD); accounting for the independent influence of various factors (demographic, environmental, social drivers of health (SDOH, education, income, insurance status), and principal components of ancestry.
