Abstract Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition with long term psychological and behavioural implications. Self-careisthecornerstonetoadaptintothiscondition. Socioculturalappropriateself-carepractices are vital aspects in nursing care. The article reviews literature on self-care among adolescents with T1DM considering socioculturalcontextand to discussexisting nursing careand itscurrentissueswithin theSriLankan context. A systematicliteraturesurveywasconducted to reviewempirical studiesfrom 2000 to 2014. Electronic databasesPubMed and CINAHL wereutilized. Personalinterviewsandrelevantwebsiteswereaccessedtoexplore existing nursing careanditscurrentissuesinSriLanka. PubMeddisplayed1, 065articlesforthekeywords ‘nursing’and ‘Type1diabetes’ whileCINAHL displayed 31articlesforthesame.‘Perceptions’,‘associated characteristics’,‘schoolbehaviour’and ‘familybehaviour’wereidentifiedasmaincategoriesintheliterature. Thenursing oriented articles relevant to self-care’,‘sociocultural’,‘Sri Lanka’and ‘Type 1 diabetes’ were insufficient in number. Scientificstudiespertaining to thefield need to optimized. Theunavailabilityofspecialized nurseeducatorsfor childhood diabetes is a noticeable issue. The implementation ofeffective nursing interventions considering Sri Lankan sociocultural context isrecommended.
