In 1995, the IALP (International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics) Board approved the Guidelines for the Initial Education in Logopedics. They have been used extensively to support and inform those interested in the development of new education courses⁄ programs and the revision of existing course curricula⁄ programs around the world. It should be noted that these guidelines refer only to the education of speech–language pathologists. The IALP recognizes that some countries may choose to train people whose work includes helping people with communication disorders via alternative or additional routes than by setting up academic programs of the type illustrated here.
