The roles of microbes in crop productivity, soil fertility, and plant health are widely recognized and understood. However, improved strategies and new approaches are now needed to maximize their potential, considering new global challenges such as increasing human population, environmental degradation, and climatic change. Throughout the history of microbiology, microbial life has been mostly characterized as planktonic. Our understanding of microbial life in the biofilm (sessile) mode has dramatically increased over the last decade in the areas of medical, food, and environmental sciences. However, interest in biofilm research in relation to plant health and disease, soil function, and in sustainable agriculture has only increased in the last few years.
