Congratulations. You have taken the next step in your advancement as a corporate event manager. Corporate event management is a young and rapidly expanding industry in its adolescent phase. It is following the paths of traditional professions such as accounting, law, and marketing and is not far behind the paths of project management and information technology. Just like an adolescent, it is bold, full of creative ideas, charming, optimistic, and reckless. But as we all know, the real world demands the qualities of responsibility, authority, and accountability. How can we introduce these qualities without ruining all that creativity? This book provides a proven and effective system that is not only accountable and responsible but also fosters the creativity so essential to an industry called “events.” There are two trends in the modern corporate event industry. The first is the drive for professionalism in response to internal and external forces, as illustrated in Figure 1, which shows in compressed form the historical process that is occurring in events. The other trend is convergence, that is, the convergence of corporate and public events. The Olympics is a prime example of this trend. The corporate hospitality events were as lavish as the actual athletic competition. In a similar way, festivals and community events are becoming more reliant on the involvement of companies through both sponsorship and expertise.
