Dinosaur tracksites have been reported from several dozen sites in the Dakota Group of the Colorado Front Range and southern High Plains of Colorado, Oklahoma and northeastern New Mexico. Recent work shows that these sites all occur in the upper part of the Dakota Group, specifically in particular beds or thin stratigraphic packages associated with the lower part of sequence three (sensu Weimer, 1984, 1989). The evidence suggests an extensively trampled tract of coastal plain sediments, popularly referred to as the" Dinosaur Freeway," possibly representing an ancient migration route, and representing a preferred habitat for omithopods.
