Over a period, plants have developed a sophisticated innate immune system to counter viral infections, which resembles that of the nonviral pathogenic system in being broadly grouped into two as (i) pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunity (PTI) and (ii) effector-triggered immunity (ETI). Currently, the area of plant-virus interactions is an emerging area for research as it provides useful insights into the emergence of viral diseases in plants, the occurrence of genetic changes, and underlying defensive mechanisms in host plants and viruses that subdue virus-induced silencing in plants. Viruses upon entry into the cells hijack the host's machinery of transcription, translation, and other processes and ramify profusely in hosts through symplastic movements.
