Objective: The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the development of invasive cervical cancers is widely known. Most HPV prevalence studies have focused on developed countries with few targeting Asian populations and none evaluating Pacific Islander populations. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of HPV subtypes in patients with cervical cancer from the Pacific Islands in order to assess the potential benefit of primary prevention through vaccination.
Methods All cases of invasive cervical cancer treated at Tripler Army Medical Center through the Pacific Island Health Care Project between January 2004 and October 2014 were identified through a centralized review of pathology specimens.
