MATERIALS AND METHODS

Cells. Jurkat, Jurkat-LTR-Luc (17), and HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines (MT-2 or C91PL) and activated primary blood lymphocytes (PBLs; referred to throughout as lymphocytes) were maintained in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS; Gibco Life Technologies) and penicillin-streptomycin (100 g/ml; Gibco Life Technologies). Primary lymphocytes were stimulated for 3 days with phytohemagglutinin (PHA; 1 g/ml; Sigma) and interleukin-2 (IL-2; 150 U/ml, Miltenyi Biotech).
