Although a linearisation step generally has an improving effect on the characterisation of the colour response of a scanner1, the results for characterisation with a regression method, using either XYZ or L* a* b* approaches, showed different behaviours for the various linearisation methods studied, and sometimes a linearisation method caused a detrimental effect on the accuracy of the characterisation. It has also been shown that the polynomial order of the regression influences the beneficial effect of each linearisation method studied.
