Feminist sociology welcomes vigorous debate based on systematic inquiry and has no interest in propagating opinion unsupported by evidence. As feminist sociologists and economists involved in research on women's employment, we are concerned that while Hakim cites feminist writers in support of her own arguments, she fails to document or give specific recent references to examples of alleged'myth-creation'. Parts of her article attack views which are not held by most researchers, feminist or otherwise;'straw women'have been set up for demolition. We do, however, wish to dispute some of Hakim's arguments, especially as to the reasons for women working part time rather than full time. Our discussion can only be brief, due to restrictions on space. The word'myth'has been used by Hakim to denote a mistake or fallacy but its correct meaning is a traditional story or allegory containing fundamental human truths …
