In 2011, the International Paralympic Committee outlined the framework for evidence-based classification in Paralympic Sport 2. The need for classification stems from two main demands. The first need is to provide a framework for determining who is and is not eligible to compete as a para-athlete. Second, classification systems in para sports group athletes into classes that control for the impact of impairments on the outcome of competition.
