This article reports on distemper, a highly contagious multisystemic disease that commonly affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and central nervous system in dogs. It is caused by canine distemper virus, a Morbillivirus in Paramyxoviridae family. Commonly occurring in domestic dogs, distemper is known to occur in dingos, foxes, and ferrets, and has emerged as a pathogen of the big cats, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and tigers in the last 10 years.
