Use of the IV curve at a moderate light intensity level is demonstrated to be sufficient for characterizing the series resistance of a solar cell. A relationship is defined between the maximum power output and the IV curve, and its reciprocal yields the series resistance. The results of the method are compared with a two-curve method and a high-intensity technique. It is found that the IV curve method does not have a dark mode limitation, requires no graphic interpretation, and requires no cooling apparatus in order to obtain acceptable measurements.
