Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause for disability and death worldwide. Although cardiovascular disease could be prevented by adhering to a healthy lifestyle, it is mostly caused by poor eating habits and physical inactivity. Cardiovascular disease treatment is limited to oral medicines or invasive surgery. Nanotechnology could therefore be a more successful therapeutic approach for lethal disorders owing to improved prognoses and fewer side effects. Nanotechnology can improve the local and systemic distribution of medications to atherosclerotic plaques, increase pharmacological effectiveness, and reduce the angiogenic or inflammatory response to intravascular interventions. Nano-sized carriers can transport and precisely deliver diagnostic and imaging agents such as markers to designated target locations.
