Recent progress in the field of material science and drug delivery systems has enabled the research community to develop nanocarriers capable of the site- and time-specific cargo release. This development has garnered much attention worldwide for the development of stimuli-responsive delivery systems. The nanocarriers employed for stimuli-sensitive systems need to be biocompatible and sensitive to external (light, ultrasound, and magnetic field) or internal (pH, redox, and enzyme) stimuli for cargo release. The sensitivity to the stimuli could be achieved by modifying the nanocarriers with stimuli-responsive moieties. However, the tremendous potential for developing a disease-specific treatment strategy with significantly reduced side-effects due to controlled release has yet to be realized completely.
