Losses from recent hurricanes demonstrate the vulnerability of the East Coast of the United States including highly populated coastal areas such as the New York Metropolitan Area to storm surge hazards. Since 2010, this area has experienced the impact of several hurricanes and other storms that resulted in loss of life, damage to personal property, and caused interruptions to supply clean water, electricity, and transport. In the past, efforts dealing with coastal flooding stressed long-term recovery and restoration. Today, ensemble-based predictions, as provided by Stevens Flood Advisory System (SFAS), have substantially advanced coastal flood forecasting in support of early warning and preparedness that resulted in reduction of losses.
