A large volume of blood is lost during spinal surgery. Blood and its products transfusion has risk for patients, so different methods are used to reduce BLEEDING and TRANEXAMIC ACID (TA) is one, which has been used successfully in liver surgery and total knee arthroplasty. It is not expensive and does not have serious side effects. Students on this drug in spine surgery are limited. Sixty patients 25-45 yrs of age were given randomly either TRANEXAMIC ACID (10 mg/kg that was infused in half and hour) or placebo (Isotonic salin). Perioperative management was standardized. The total amount of blood transfused and intraoperative blood loss in the perioperative period was significantly reduced in the tranexamic group (P= 0.044). surgeon’s satisfaction and operative field condition between 2 groups were significantly different. The patients has the potential to reduce perioperative blood loss and transfusion.
