A cluster model approach is applied to the analysis of the Ni 21) core-level X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in Ni dihalides, where the intraatomic multiplet coupl—ing is fully taken into account. The difference in the line shape between the 2173/2 and 2171/2 spectra is shown to originate from the multiplet splitting of their charge transfer satellites.
