Campylobacter is a major foodborne pathogen worldwide. In vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of feed additives for the reduction of Campylobacter in broilers and to understand the immune response of chickens to Campylobacter colonization. In vitro experiments showed that the supernatants from Pediococcus acidilactici, Enterococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium animalis, and Lactobacillus reuteri decreased (P< 0.05) the proliferation of C. jejuni and C. coli. In addition, the organic acid concentration of 0.08% significantly decreased the in vitro proliferation of C. coli (P< 0.05). For the in vivo studies, experiment 1 showed that probiotic supplemented treatments had significantly higher TNF-α mRNA levels (P< 0.01).
