The field of gender and environment studies is inspired by an interest in environmental issues and an understanding that these issues are gendered in complicated and important ways. These gender^ environment relations have significant symbolic and material consequences in how nature is understood, in how environmental resources and responsibilities are managed and distributed, and in gendered power dynamics that play out in the day-to-day lives of people around the world. At the same time, this relation between gender and environment is twofold: the gendered environments we signify, inhabit, and transform, and the gendered power relations implicated in the complex dynamics of resource access and control, play an important role in processes of subject formation.
