It is projected that by 2051, close to a quarter of the Australian population will be over the age of 65 years, 5% of which will be over the age of 85 years (AIHW, 2021). It is not surprising, then, that palliative care has garnered increasing attention in healthcare aims and practices. The cornerstones of healthy ageing and wellbeing are maintaining optimal health and function for as long as possible and supporting individuals with the utmost dignity and care during loss of function and/or progression to end of life. Health professionals, including speechlanguage pathologists (SLPs), are integral to support healthy ageing and eventual progression to end-of-life care.
