In the last years, we have noticed that the air is becoming harder to breathe, the soil lost its capacity of production, while water changed its colour and smell. This is a major consequence of environmental pollution of air, water and soil, with various contaminants that have an immediate or long-term effect. Heavy metals are among the most researched pollutants, due to their persistent nature in the environment, high abundance and non-biodegradable. Regarding the effects to human health, heavy metals can cause mutagenic effects, endocrine disruption and neurological disorders even in low concentrations. For an efficient, eco-friendly and low-cost removal of heavy metals, phytoremediation seems to be one of the most suitable and promising technologies.
