Analyzes the problem of the alcoholic marriage from 4 different and sometimes opposing viewpoints: psychoanalytic, sociological, behavioral, and systems theory. Empirical literature is reviewed in an attempt to distinguish fact from theory, and it is contended that psychoanalytic concepts have been abused and oversimplified.
