Nanotechnology has pushed usage of silver beyond coinage to a plethora of applications thanks to the new and unique properties of silver at nanoscale that are shape- and size-dependent. These properties are only accessible via synthetic protocols that precisely tailor shape and particle size. This chapter explores several chemical synthesis strategies that are routinely used to prepare silver nanoparticles. Furthermore, key synthesis parameters and how they are manipulated in different synthetic approaches to bring about particle size and shape control—and hence the unique properties—are discussed. Some synthesis methods with aspects of green silver nanoparticles synthesis, particularly toxicity of reducing and capping agents and energy consumption, are also covered.
