Background
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can cause sudden cardiac death (SCD). Though many studies have focused on SCD as a primary outcome, rarely are other causes of death among patients with HCM evaluated. This study aimed to identify the causes of death in HCM patients using information from death certificates.
Methods
Information from 275 HCM patients deceased from 2004 to 2020 and their cause of death was abstracted from Minnesota death certificates (85% Minnesota residents). Reasons for death were categorized as cardiac eg ventricular arrhythmias and SCD, versus non-cardiac, such as cancer and trauma. To test reliability, abstracted causes of death were compared to Mayo Clinic Electronic Health Record or EHR (Figure).
Results
115 (41%) and 141 (51%) patients died of cardiac and non-cardiac causes. Cause of death was unclear in 9 cases. Older patients were more likely to die …
